Mar 12, 2026: Computer Science Tech Talk: Dr. Colin Shea-Blymyer at Morken Center for Learning & Technology

We're pleased to welcome Dr. Colin Shea-Blymyer to PLU to deliver March's Computer Science Tech Talk: "AI Risk, Evaluation, and Governance." The companies developing Large Language Models (LLMs) have promised that they will be used to find cures for disease, to alleviate repetitive tasks, and to produce flawless code. In practice, AI systems have been misused to fabricate legal advice, operate cyber attacks, and run phishing scams. This talk will address the potential risks from AI systems built on LLMs, how to evaluate those systems for risk, and how to govern and mitigate these risks. The lecture is geared towards Computer Science majors, but all are welcome to attend.

Dr. Colin Shea-Blymyer is a Research Fellow at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), where he works on the CyberAI Team. His current research is focused on the safe and secure development and deployment of AI systems, and has spanned safe reinforcement learning, formal methods, adversarial machine learning, and AI ethics. Colin teaches AI Governance and National Policy at Georgetown, and he received a Grand Prize at the second DEF CON Generative AI Red-Teaming competition. Previously, he was a graduate researcher with MITRE, where he helped establish the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) program on adversarial machine learning research at the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCOE). He holds an MS and BS in Computer Science from Virginia Tech. He has a PhD in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence from Oregon State University, where he was an Outstanding Scholar Fellow.

The PLU Weathermon Jazz Festival is a non-competitive music event that aims to provide helpful feedback to jazz ensembles and band directors; to inspire the next generations of jazz musicians through professional concerts, clinics, and masterclasses; and to build connections in the jazz community within our region and beyond.

The 8th Annual Joyful Noise Jazz Concert features special guest artist Anat Cohen with the PLU Jazz Ensemble and the Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra.

Ever charismatic, prolific and inspired, Grammy-nominated clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen has won hearts and minds the world over with her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence. Anat has been declared Clarinetist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association every year since 2007, and has also been named the top clarinetist in both the readers and critics polls in DownBeat for multiple years running. That’s not to mention years of being named Rising Star in the soprano and tenor saxophone categories in DownBeat, as well as Jazz Artist of the Year. In 2009, ASCAP awarded Anat a Wall of Fame prize for composition and musicianship, among other honors. As The Chicago Tribune has said about Anat, “The lyric beauty of her tone, easy fluidity of her technique and extroverted manner of her delivery make this music accessible to all.”

However easy Anat makes it seem onstage, the mastery of any great art is a long, elusive challenge, and she teaches the fine points of jazz and the music of Brazil to budding students across North America, including recent residencies at Stanford, Oberlin, Michigan State University, University of California-San Diego, the Centrum Choro Workshop and California Brazil Camp. About her experiences onstage, in the classroom or just engaging with her listeners, Anat says: “Any day when I get to share music with people – other musicians, an audience – feels like a celebration to me.” - Bradley Bambarger

In Partnership with Blue Zones Project. These free classes are open to PLU students, faculty, and staff!

We are thrilled to share that one of PLU's own, Rachel Howard with the COHP, will be partnering with Blue Zones in leading the 30 min Yoga Series being offered every 'Tuesday' at 12:00-12:30 pm.

The upcoming yoga series will incorporate breathwork and meditation, alongside a gentle yoga sequence. A survey will be provided to attendees, pertaining to yoga styles and offerings. Guests are encouraged to complete this survey to provide input on the style of yoga they are hoping to familiarize themselves with during this time.

Remember, the practice of yoga is the practice of grace and openness. Therefore, there are no wrong answers. Merely curiosity on how we can meet the interests, grow excitement, and have some fun.

Yoga is for the mind, body, and soul - and all are welcome, whether you are new to yoga, or an experienced yogi. The hardest part is to make it to the mat (or chair), but we are stronger together and your presence is magical. Rest assured that this 30 minutes of wellness is restorative, not high endurance. No need for athletic gear, as you can return to your regular schedule without fearing the effects of an intensive (and smelly) workout :)

Come be part of our PLU queer community monthly socials! Queer Connections is a space to connect, reconnect, get support, and experience queer joy with fellow 2SLGBTQIA+ students, staff, and faculty.

All 2SLGBTQIA+ students, staff, and faculty are welcome to join us any or all months!

The next Queer Connections will be Friday, March 20th, 3-4pm (Location coming soon!). The optional activity will be button-making! We will have prompts and templates available around the theme of cross-movement solidarity to make buttons, or you can make your own design.

Remember, the practice of yoga is the practice of grace and openness. Therefore, there are no wrong answers. Merely curiosity on how we can meet the interests, grow excitement, and have some fun.

Regional/International

Stephen Price closes the series with a program featuring recently-composed works from near and far. He will perform music by beloved French-Canadian composer Rachel Laurin alongside works by Swedish composer Erland Hildèn and PLU alumnus Frederick Frahm.

Stephen “Stef” C. Price joined the music faculty at the University of Washington (Seattle) as the inaugural Paul B. Fritts Faculty Fellow and Artist-in-Residence and head of organ studies beginning in September 2023. He is in demand as a concert artist and teacher throughout the United States, with recent solo appearances at Christ Church Cathedral (Victoria, BC) and Loyola University (Chicago, IL.). Stef studied at Western Connecticut State University and the Jacobs School of Music at University of Indiana, where he earned MM and DMA degrees. He was also awarded a Fulbright fellowship to study in Toulouse, France. Following his graduate studies, Stef accepted a full-time position as Associate Director of Music and Organist at First United Methodist Church, San Diego, California (2015-17). From 2018-2023, he was Assistant Teaching Professor at Ball State University in Muncie, IN.

In the spirit of Earth & Diversity Week’s call to rethink our narratives about the systems that power our lives, the clothing swap becomes a space to repurpose habits, redirect energy, and share stories. Participants can explore how clothing shapes belonging, how energy flows through our choices, and how collective action can move us toward a more energized future together.

For three weeks leading up to Earth & Diversity Week (March 30th to April 17th), students can donate clothing in bins located in residence halls or outside the Center for DJS. During the two‑day swap, students can come to choose new pieces for free and are invited to learn and reflect on the intersection of energy systems and clothing, including:

Event Description: Join PSYC 375: Psychology of Women, the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center, and the Center for DJS in exploring unhealthy relationship dynamics through this interactive simulation. Participants will get to move through a series of written scenarios based on real accounts, where it will be up to them to decide what choices their character makes. Follow the currents of supports and barriers individuals and communities navigate in the face of interpersonal and systemic violence.

Please join us for the Paul O. Ingram Lecture on Wednesday, April 22, featuring Dr. Stephanie Kaza. Drawing on Buddhist philosophy and practice, Dr. Kaza explores how concepts such as interbeing, bodhicitta, and ecosattva shape ethically grounded climate activism. She reframes climate emotions—greed, rage, dread, and despair—as transformative energies that can deepen care for human–earth relationships.

Dr. Kaza is Professor Emerita of Environmental Studies at the University of Vermont and a longtime practitioner of Soto Zen Buddhism. She is the recipient of multiple honors, including UVM’s George V. Kidder Outstanding Faculty Award and the 2024 Freudenberg Lifetime Achievement Award.

George Washington and Slavery in American Memory

How should we remember George Washington’s involvement in slavery? What is the proper place of slavery in Washington’s legacy? In this lecture, historian John Garrison Marks will share how, in fact, Americans have argued over these questions for nearly 250 years. More than any other “Founding Father,” Washington’s ties to slavery have vexed us. He enslaved more people than any of his fellow Founders, yet he was the only one of them to emancipate the people he held in bondage. Since his death, Americans have grappled with this contradiction, shaping and re-shaping our collective memory of Washington and slavery—along with our understanding of the nation. Lecture is free and open to the public

Speaker: John Garrison Marks is a historian and writer whose work has appeared in TIME, Washington Post, and Smithsonian Magazine. Marks currently serves as the Vice President of Research and Engagement at the American Association for State and Local History. Previously the author of Black Freedom in the Age of Slavery, he earned his Ph.D. from Rice University. Marks’ newest book is Thy Will Be Done: George Washington’s Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory, published in April 2026.

The Schmidt Vocal Competition encourages young artists to pursue their passion in the vocal arts, providing opportunities and support to help inspire future generations of singers. High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors perform and participate in master classes with some of today's most renowned vocal professionals. Each year, Schmidt Vocal Arts gives away over $625,000 in cash awards and scholarships.

Schmidt Competition participants have gone on to gain entrance into the world’s finest music schools and include winners of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the George London Competition, the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Awards Competition, Classical Singer, and the National Opera Association Award.

In Partnership with Blue Zones Project. These free classes are open to PLU students, faculty, and staff!

We are thrilled to share that one of PLU's own, Rachel Howard with the COHP, will be partnering with Blue Zones in leading the 30 min Yoga Series being offered every 'Tuesday' at 12:00-12:30 pm.

Remember, the practice of yoga is the practice of grace and openness. Therefore, there are no wrong answers. Merely curiosity on how we can meet the interests, grow excitement, and have some fun.

We will be meeting 12:00-12:30 pm on the following dates:

The Light in the Piazza the musical

Margaret Johnson, the wife of an American businessman, is touring the Tuscan countryside with her daughter, Clara. While sightseeing, Clara – a beautiful, surprisingly childish young woman – loses her hat in a sudden gust. As if guided by an unseen hand, the hat lands at the feet of Fabrizio Naccarelli, a handsome Florentine, who returns it to Clara. This brief episode, charged with coincidence and fate, sparks an immediate and intense romance between Clara and Fabrizio. Margaret, extremely protective of her daughter, attempts to keep Clara and Fabrizio apart. But as events unfold, a secret is revealed: in addition to the cultural differences between the young lovers, Clara is not quite all that she appears. Unable to suppress the truth about her daughter, Margaret is forced to reconsider not only Clara's future, but her own hopes as well.

The purpose of these reviews is to ensure quality teaching and learning is consistent across the university. In addition, these reviews are an essential component of on-going university assessment. These reviews also support the professional development of our faculty members.

Within 30 days of the end of the term in which teaching responsibilities for the academic year are completed or by June 1 (whichever is earlier), the faculty member will complete an annual activity report for the appropriate chair or dean. A template for the activity report will be provided by the Office of the Provost. The report will include a self-evaluation, and reflections on available teaching and course feedback forms. Where relevant, the report will include a discussion of priorities for the coming academic year in regards to teaching, scholarly or professional activity and service. Thirty days after the receipt of the report, the chair or dean will complete a performance review based on the report above and deliver the completed review to the Office of the Provost; the chair or dean will also give a copy of the review to the faculty member.
