The 8th Annual Joyful Noise Jazz Concert features special guest artist Anat Cohen with the PLU Jazz Ensemble and the Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra.

Ever charismatic, prolific and inspired, Grammy-nominated clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen has won hearts and minds the world over with her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence. Anat has been declared Clarinetist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association every year since 2007, and has also been named the top clarinetist in both the readers and critics polls in DownBeat for multiple years running. That’s not to mention years of being named Rising Star in the soprano and tenor saxophone categories in DownBeat, as well as Jazz Artist of the Year. In 2009, ASCAP awarded Anat a Wall of Fame prize for composition and musicianship, among other honors. As The Chicago Tribune has said about Anat, “The lyric beauty of her tone, easy fluidity of her technique and extroverted manner of her delivery make this music accessible to all.”

However easy Anat makes it seem onstage, the mastery of any great art is a long, elusive challenge, and she teaches the fine points of jazz and the music of Brazil to budding students across North America, including recent residencies at Stanford, Oberlin, Michigan State University, University of California-San Diego, the Centrum Choro Workshop and California Brazil Camp. Stephen Price closes the series with a program featuring recently-composed works from near and far. He will perform music by beloved French-Canadian composer Rachel Laurin alongside works by Swedish composer Erland Hildèn and PLU alumnus Frederick Frahm.

Stephen “Stef” C. Price joined the music faculty at the University of Washington (Seattle) as the inaugural Paul B. Fritts Faculty Fellow and Artist-in-Residence and head of organ studies beginning in September 2023. He is in demand as a concert artist and teacher throughout the United States, with recent solo appearances at Christ Church Cathedral (Victoria, BC) and Loyola University (Chicago, IL.). Stef studied at Western Connecticut State University and the Jacobs School of Music at University of Indiana, where he earned MM and DMA degrees. He was also awarded a Fulbright fellowship to study in Toulouse, France. Following his graduate studies, Stef accepted a full-time position as Associate Director of Music and Organist at First United Methodist Church, San Diego, California (2015-17). From 2018-2023, he was Assistant Teaching Professor at Ball State University in Muncie, IN.

Forestine Wise Monsen was the inspiration for this memorial scholarship. A lifelong music student and teacher, she studied with Calvin Knapp and graduated from PLU with degrees in education and sacred music. Margaret Johnson, the wife of an American businessman, is touring the Tuscan countryside with her daughter, Clara. While sightseeing, Clara – a beautiful, surprisingly childish young woman – loses her hat in a sudden gust. As if guided by an unseen hand, the hat lands at the feet of Fabrizio Naccarelli, a handsome Florentine, who returns it to Clara. This brief episode, charged with coincidence and fate, sparks an immediate and intense romance between Clara and Fabrizio. Margaret, extremely protective of her daughter, attempts to keep Clara and Fabrizio apart. But as events unfold, a secret is revealed: in addition to the cultural differences between the young lovers, Clara is not quite all that she appears. Unable to suppress the truth about her daughter, Margaret is forced to reconsider not only Clara's future, but her own hopes as well.
