Bring your friends to movie night in the Scan Center Nov. 23, 6:30pm – 9:00pm! We are watching Ancestral Waters–a documentary made over the course of the Puyallup tribe’s battle against PSE building an LNG plant on the Port of Tacoma. As uninvited guests on Puyallup land, it is our responsibility to be their allies when they defend their sovereign nation and their right to govern that nation. With the Day of Mourning on the 28th, this is an exceptionally important time to highlight the struggles that they are facing today.
Bring your own pillow and blanket to get comfy! (And if getting down to the floor isn’t your jam, there will be comfortable seating provided). Come celebrate community and solidarity with root beer floats and a Best-Dressed-Teddy (all cuddly-friends inclusive) competition!
”Ancestral Waters takes you into the heart of the Puyallup Tribe's ongoing 170-year struggle for survival, resilience, and sovereignty. The latest battleground is against a fracked gas facility posing an existential threat to their tribal waters, all amid the overarching crisis of unprecedented climate change.
The film serves as a stark reminder that the infringement on tribal rights is not a singular event, but part of an ongoing narrative since first contact with colonizers. From the moment the Medicine Creek Treaty was signed, its provisions have been violated repeatedly, leading to a chain of struggles that resonate across tribal nations.
Through intimate personal stories and the powerful voices of the Puyallup people, 'Ancestral Waters calls upon us to bear witness to this crucial chapter of an enduring fight. The ancestral waters of the Puyallup Tribe are not just geographical locations; they are sacred spaces intricately woven into their culture, identity, and very existence.
In a time of mounting environmental crises and challenges to Indigenous sovereignty, the story of the Puyallup Tribe serves as a poignant call for collective action and solidarity.” - NDN
