This lecture recital traces the evolution of the Argentine tango from its early roots through its related genres such as the Latin American danza habanera, through its formative stages as a popular dance characterized by diverse influences, evolving practices and representative orquestas típicas and cantores. Through recorded musical examples and live performances, the presentation will explore how tango developed into a distinct musical language with its own idioms, expressive nuances, and stylistic conventions. The presentation culminates with the performance of Piazzolla's Tango-Rapsodia on Adiós Nonino, a literal transcription of the Quinteto Astor Piazzolla’s 1969 recording of the piece. This work exemplifies the remarkable transformation of the genre through its sophisticated harmonic vocabulary, formal conception, and expressive depth.
Admission is free, no ticket required.
