“Wizards And Magicians Were Found Everywhere”: Legends Of Witchcraft From The Nordic Countries - Webinar

The Scandinavian Cultural Center at PLU is delighted to present Dr. Amber Cederström's virtual lecture "'Wizards And Magicians Were Found Everywhere': Legends Of Witchcraft From The Nordic Countries "

Abstract:  What is a witch and what do witches do? This presentation will start to address these deceptively simple questions in a Nordic context, looking particularly at the witch of Nordic legends. We’ll discuss how legends generally differ from folktales, which also sometimes feature witches, and how legendary witchcraft played a role in the Nordic “witch hunts” of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Dr. Cederström recently published her dissertation Poisoner, shapeshifter, adultress, thief: Legends and Images of Witchcraft in Finnmark and Gotland, which concerns legends of witches from fifteenth-, sixteenth-, and seventeenth-century Scandinavia. She demonstrates that the figure of the witch was deeply meaningful and spoke in the symbolic language of legends to anxieties surrounding womanhood, motherhood, and the social power of women to construct and maintain communities.
